Silkair, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, is the regional airline headquartered in Singapore. It was founded in 1976 as Tradewinds Charters functioning as a holiday resort airline. The airline got its present name in 1992 when it evolved into a full-fledged regional carrier. It operates flights to over 51 cities in India, China, Australia and Southeast Asia. The airline serves major short-haul destinations of the Singapore airlines network. As of march 2015 the airline employed 1,452 staff and flew nearly 3.5 million passengers, reaping good profits. The company codeshares with a number of airlines that include Air China, Air New Zealand, Bangkok Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Lao Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia.
